Music Institute of Chicago Faculty Member Scores Success in Tokyo

MIC faculty pianist featured on new CD

Reiko Yamada, faculty member at the Music Institute of Chicago, performed as soloist with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra this past spring.  The concert was a special event honoring the anniversary of the birth of Japanese composer Akira Ifukube. Ifukube was a lauded composer and pedagogue, President of the Tokyo College of Music and author of a much-used textbook on orchestration. American audiences perhaps know him best as the composer of the score to the classic 1954 film, Godzilla.

Ms. Yamada performed the composer's Ritmico Ostinata, with conductor Michiyoshi Inoue and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra at Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall on May 3st.  In addition to her work as a distguished faculty member at the Music Institute of Chicago, Ms. Yamada serves as Principal Keyboardist with the Kalamazoo Symphony. She developed a deep affinity for Ifukube's music as a student at the Tokyo College of Music, attending the composer's seminars over a period of four years.
