Suzuki Program Director
Reports to: Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs
Location: Winnetka Campus
Hours / Week: 20 hours of administrative work; at least five hours of teaching
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience. Includes competitive benefits package.
Supervised personnel: approx. 45
Job Summary: Oversee the administration of the Suzuki program at all MIC campuses and position the Music Institute of Chicago as a leading institution for Suzuki education in the Americas (Downers Grove, Evanston, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire, Winnetka and outreach programs).
Qualifications
- Suzuki Teacher Trainer
- Master of Music or equivalent pedagogical training
- A minimum of 10 years as a Suzuki instructor
- Commitment to Suzuki principles and experience working with young children and their parents

Principal Responsibilities
Manage Suzuki Program
- Develop a viable Suzuki Program at all MIC locations
- Manage Suzuki program budget
- Oversee Suzuki group classes
- Supervise and expand Suzuki Parent Education at MIC
- Work with Campus Directors to develop a stronger understanding of the Suzuki Method to facilitate student placement and program development
- Review evaluation reports for students in the Suzuki program
- Represent MIC in the national and international Suzuki community
- Oversee Suzuki Sampler program
- Advise and facilitate communication between students, parents, and teachers, including student transfers
Supervise, mentor and evaluate Suzuki faculty
- Supervise faculty in the Suzuki program
- Identify, interview and hire new faculty, in consultation with the Dean
- Provide ongoing educational growth and pedagogical training
- Assist and counsel with teaching problems
- Evaluate Suzuki faculty using MIC faculty evaluation procedures
- Hold monthly faculty meetings with pedagogical emphasis
- Promote collegiality and cooperation in the Suzuki faculty
Provide Suzuki Instruction
- Teach a minimum of five hours per week for the Suzuki program (excluding summer term) (may include private instruction, group classes, Suzuki samplers, teacher training, etc.)
Oversee Suzuki Recruitment
- Actively recruit new students into the Suzuki program through instrument petting zoos, outside performances, Suzuki Samplers, networking, presentations in local schools, etc.
- Develop a Suzuki Teacher Training Center at the Music Institute of Chicago
- Implement and supervise Teacher Development Programs in Suzuki Pedagogy at the Music Institute of Chicago
- Offer Every Child Can! at least twice a year
- Encourage experienced Suzuki faculty members to become teacher trainers
Manage Suzuki Concerts and Events
- Oversee Suzuki Sundays
- Oversee Suzuki Graduation Concert
- Oversee Suzuki Festival Concerts
- Oversee Mid-Winter Workshops (coordinated by the Administrative Assistant of the Suzuki Program)
Perform other duties as assigned
This position includes some weekend hours in order to oversee Suzuki concerts and events. This is a non-exempt, full time position.
