Sonata Class will provide a survey of the sonata/duo repertoire for strings and piano. Duo playing is one of the most intimate forms of chamber music, and often challenging for young performers. This class will cover major works from the repertory with an overview of the history of chamber music and the duo repertoire's special place within. Participants will be paired into duos and assigned a work to study over the course of the semester. Each course will take place like a master class/studio class in which students will learn to give and receive peer feedback. A schedule will be set in which participants will play in class each week and be coached in front of their peers. Students are expected to attend and participate each week regardless of whether they are playing/performing. The active listening garnered by following along with the music while other groups are performing, will be part of this class’s learning and educational process. Coaching will include topics such as cueing, intonation with piano, articulation as an ensemble, and how to communicate effectively in rehearsal and beyond. This class will culminate in a performance at the end of the semester, where students will perform the works they studied in class. Repertore will be chosen in sonslutation with the students' primary teachers.
