2014 Super Senior: Guy Riendeau, New Horizons Band

2014 North Shore Senior Center Super Senior Volunteer Awards

On May 22 the North Shore Senior Center honored 40 dedicated senior volunteers from a wide range of north suburban organizations at the 41st Super Senior Day.  2,000 seniors have been awarded "Super Senior" status since 1973.  The NSSC says: "In contemporary society, older adults take on very special roles as mentors and models.  Their caring deeds, expertise, and community involvement signify their commitment to fellow citizens and to the areas in which they live.  These seniors are a shining example of how the individual, in any number of ways, can contribute to the betterment of society."

Music Institute of Chicago, for the second year, has nominated a senior from one of our large adult studies classes who has given invaluable assistance to teachers, made contributions to thier fellow students in addition to serious musicianship.

In 2013 we were delighted to honor Mary Daniels, a long time student violinist and member of the Community Symphony Orchestra with Larry Eckerling.

This year our recipient was Guy Riendeau, a trumpeter in the New Horizons Band with new faculty member, Paul Hefner.  A free lance trumpet player, Guy performed in various ensembles in New England before moving to the Chicagoland area recently.  He helps set up chairs and stands for rehearsal and helps other members carry their equipment. Guy always puts the needs of others before his own.  He is positive and supportive of the members and director…..and he plays his trumpet well! Recently Guy founded the “Young at Heart” Project of Illinois, and serves as its director, and plays in a trumpet piano duo. He is committed to making a difference in the lives of seniors confined to elder care and assisted living facilities. Guy is a mentor with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and continues to provide his 13 year old “Little Brother” who lives in Kennebunk, Maine with trumpet lessons via Skype. Guy proudly keeps his mentoring skills  “in tune.”  We recognize – Guy Riendeau!
