Education: 

She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University with a double major in Violin Performance and Music Education.  While at Northwestern, she was on the Dean’s list and a member of College Students of America.  She received a Masters of Music degree from DePaul University where she was a scholarship recipient as well as concertmistress of the University Symphony Orchestra.  Additional studies include long term Suzuki violin training at the University of Minnesota.  Ms. Arbetter is a registered Suzuki teacher and enjoys teaching both private and group classes.

Teaching philosophy and areas of expertise: 

I am extremely fortunate to work in the field of sharing the gift of music. I am blessed to observe students achieve small goals which turn into larger goals, which turn into personal bests.

Awards and achievements: 

Melissa Arbetter is an active teacher and performer throughout the Chicago region.  She has taught violin at Music Institute of Chicago since 2008.  Previously, she taught violin for twelve years at DePaul University Community Music Division in Chicago, Illinois.  Additionally, Ms. Arbetter has taught Chamber Music for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.  She has also served on the judges panel of the DePaul University Community Music Division Concerto Competition as well as the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Solo Competition.
As a Chamber Music masterclass participant, she has performed for Mennahem Pressler and with the Miami String Quartet.

Professional affiliations & activities: 

Melissa Arbetter has performed with Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Philharmonic, Lake Forest Symphony, AIMS Festival Orchestra (Graz, Austria), Rochester Symphony Orchestra (MN). As a Chamber Music Coach, she has worked with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Arbetter has participated in numerous summer festivals, including the AIM Festival Orchestra in Austria and the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado.  Ms. Arbetter has also appeared with diverse pop artists, ranging from Richard Marx to The Moody Blues.  Chicago theater credits include performing at the Jeff Awards as well as five consecutive years as a violinist in The Christmas Schooner musical at the Mercury Theater Chicago.  Ms. Arbetter can be heard on recordings by the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Forest Symphony, and Season of Carols 2012 edition.  Film credits include Home Alone 2; television credits include WGN Chicago News; radio credits include a live broadcast on WBEZ.

Favorite practice tip: 

In addition to using standard repetition, roll a dice to dictate the number of times to practice a challenging passage. If the passage is particularly difficult, roll two dice.

I could listen to Brahms all day!

Favorite musical moment: 

Each time a student achieves their personal best, I am overjoyed! Chatting with former CSO conductor Daniel Barenboim on the streets of Chicago was a memorable moment.
