The MIC is ranked as one of the three largest and most respected community music schools in the country, setting national standards for excellence in music education and was the first among its peers in Illinois to be accredited by the  National Association of Schools of Music (the body that accredits college/university music departments).

The MIC's reputation for excellence attracts 3,000 students from 90 Illinois communities (from toddlers to senior citizens as old as 101), as well as from several other states and foreign countries.

Involvement in the Lives of Others

MIC awards more than $500,000 in direct scholarships, financial aid and senior discounts to more than 500 deserving students each year.

Over 75 percent of the MIC's students are children grades K-12.

The MIC's licensed, clinical professionals at the Institute for Therapy through the Arts (ITA) provide creative arts therapy to more than 2,000 people with special physical and emotional needs at more than 90 locations throughout the greater Chicago metropolitan area.  Since its founding in 1975, ITA has provided services to more than 47,000 individuals.

The MIC provides music education and instruction and clinical services  at numerous sites through its accessible arts initiatives in the inner city. In addition, MIC has a satellite location in Downers Grove and five permanent campuses located in Evanston (2), Lincolnshire, Winnetka and Lake Forest.

More than 6,500 inner city children in the Chicago Public Schools are served through  MIC’s Arts Link  program.

MIC students place in over 200 local and national competitions annually and many continue their music studies at the nation's top conservatories and universities.

Nichols Concert Hall, which is located in a magnificently restored landmark building in downtown Evanston, provides opportunities for the public to experience world class artists, MIC students and artists-in-residence and cultural events in an acoustically exceptional concert venue.  Approximately 14,000 audience members enjoy hundreds of concerts each year.
