Minimum Requirements
for Academy String & Piano Auditions
While it is ultimately up to a student and teacher to determine what will be played at the Academy audition based on the requirements below, they should understand that the Academy is a highly selective training center, and is only intended for very advanced students, whatever their age.

Violin
Ages 12-13
Prepare two contrasting movements (fast and slow) from one of these concertos:
Mozart Concerto #3 in G Major, Haydn Concerto in C Major, Bruch
Concerto #1 in g minor, Viotti Concerto #22 in a minor, or equivalent concerto
Ages 14 - 18
Two contrasting movements (fast and slow) from Lalo Symphonie Espagnole,
Tchaikovsky Concerto, Prokofiev Concerto #2, or equivalent major nineteenth
or twentieth century concerto.
PLUS
A Paganini Caprice or two contrasting movements from a Sonata or Partita by J. S. Bach
Viola
Ages 12 - 13
Prepare two contrasting movements (fast and slow) from one of these concertos:
Telemann Concerto, Hindemith Trauermusik (Music of Mourning), or equivalent concerto
Ages 14 - 18
Prepare two contrasting movements (fast and slow) from one of these concertos:
Walton Concerto, Stamitz Concerto, Bartok Concerto, Rebecca Clarke Sonata, or equivalent concerto
PLUS
Two contrasting movements of a suite by J. S. Bach
Cello
Ages 12 - 13
Prepare two contrasting movements (fast and slow) from one of these concertos:
Saint-Saëns Concerto, J.C. Bach/Casadesus Concerto, Boccherini/Grützmacher Concerto, Haydn C Major Concerto, or equivalent concerto
Ages 14 - 18
Prepare two contrasting movements (fast and slow) from one of these concertos:
Lalo Concerto, Elgar Concerto, Haydn D Major Concerto, Schumann Concerto, Dvořák Concerto, Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations or equivalent concerto
PLUS
Two contrasting movements of a suite by J. S. Bach
Piano
All pianists will have sight reading as part of their audition.
Ages 12 - 13 – Audition from three of these four categories:
1. A movement from a Baroque period work – Bach, Händel, etc.
2. A movement from a Classical period sonata-Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven
3. A Romantic period work e.g. Chopin Fantasie-Impromptu, Grand Waltz
4. A movement from a twentieth century work – e.g. Bartok Suite, Op. 14,
Debussy – Pour le Piano etc.
Ages 14 - 18 – Audition from three of these four categories:
1. A Bach Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier
2. A sonata movement by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert
3. A large scale romantic or impressionist work– e.g. a Chopin
Ballade or Scherzo; Debussy – L’Isle Joyeuse
4. A movement from a twentieth century work – e.g. Barber Piano Sonata
