Summer Jazz


2018 Summer Jazz Camps

The Music Institute of Chicago provides students of all ages and levels opportunities to explore jazz with some of Chicago finest jazz performers and educators through private instruction, combos and improvisation classes and jazz bands and jam sessions.


The Art of the Jazz Band I (grades 7-9)

Session I ~ June 18 - 22   
Location: Evanston East Campus: 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, IL

Registration Deadline: June 11, 2018

 

Session II ~ July 9 - 13   
Location: Winnetka Campus: 300 Green Bay Road, Winnetka, IL

Registration Deadline: July 2, 2018

 

Times: Monday-Friday:  1:30-4 pm

Sample Daily Schedule:   1:30-2:30 pm ensemble rehearsal | 2:30-3:30 pm masterclass/sectionals | 3:30-4 pm ensemble rehearsal/ listening session


Prerequisites: At least one year of jazz ensemble experience or private lessons preferred.  Phone interview required prior to registration.

Instructors:  Audrey Morrison, trombone: Director of Jazz Studies at MIC,  Ravinia Jazz Mentors,  Birch Creek Jazz Program, formerly with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Barrett Deems Big Band, Clark Terry Summer Big Band, DIVA Big Band. Select members of the Music Institute of Chicago Jazz Faculty.

Cost:  $250 per session; register for one or both.  (those who have not studied with MIC during the 2017-2018 school year will be charged a $30 registration fee)

The Art of the Jazz Band Camp at MIC offers students the opportunity to improve their ensemble, improvisational and sight-reading skills through work with professional jazz musicians who are also great educators. Audrey Morrison leads rehearsals and members of the MIC jazz faculty will offer sectionals, coaching and master classes and more. Session I will end with an open rehearsal/concert on the final day of camp at Nichols Concert Hall (1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston).  Session II will end with an open rehearsal/concert on the final day of camp at Thoresen Performance Center (300 Green Bay Road, Winnetka).

 


The Art of the Jazz Band II (high school-adult):  June 25 - 29

Location: Winnetka Campus, 300 Green Bay Road, Winnetka, IL

Registration Deadline: June 18, 2018

 

Times: Monday-Friday:  1:30-4:30 pm
