Summer Jazz

 

2019 Summer Jazz Camps

The Music Institute of Chicago provides students of all ages and levels opportunities to explore jazz with some of Chicago's finest jazz performers and educators through private instruction, combos and improvisation classes and jazz bands and jam sessions.

 


The Art of the Jazz Band I:  
Camp Director:  Audrey Morrison  (Director of Jazz Studies at MIC,  Ravinia Jazz Mentors,  Birch Creek Jazz Program, formerly with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Barrett Deems Big Band, Clark Terry Summer Big Band, DIVA Big Band. Select members of the Music Institute of Chicago Jazz Faculty).

 

Instructor:  Audrey Morrison, trombone 

 

Grades 7 - 9:  Session I  ~ June 17 - 21  |  M-F  |  1:30 - 4 PM

Evanston East Campus, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston
Prerequisites: At least one year of jazz ensemble experience or private lessons preferred. Phone interview required prior to registration.
Registration Deadline: June 3, 2019
Closing Concert - Open Rehearsal (free and open to the public): Friday, June 21 at 2:00 pm | Nichols Concert Hall (1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston)

 

Grades:  6 - 10:  Session II ~ July 8 - 12  |  M-F  |  1:30 - 4 PM 

Winnetka Campus, 300 Green Bay Road, Winnetka
Prerequisites: Must have proficiency on instrument; however, no prior jazz experience required. Phone interview required prior to registration.
Registration Deadline: July 1, 2019

Closing Concert-Open Rehearsal (free and open to the public) : Friday, July 12 at 2:30 pm | Thoresen Performance Center (300 Green Bay Road, Winnetka)

 

 

Sample Daily Schedule:  

1:30-2:30 pm ensemble rehearsal

2:30-3:30 pm master classes/sectionals with MIC jazz faculty

3:30-4 pm ensemble rehearsal/ listening session

 

Cost:  $275 per session; register for one or both.  (+30 registration fee for new/returning students)

Audrey Morrison leads rehearsals and members of the MIC jazz faculty will offer sectionals, coaching and master classes and more.

 

 


The Art of the Jazz Band II:  CANCELLED

High school-adult:  June 24 - 28  |  M-F  |  1:30 - 4 PM 

Location: Winnetka Campus, 300 Green Bay Road, Winnetka

Registration Deadline: June 10, 2019
