What do you love about Chicago?
Chicago has the exciting cultural diversity of a big city, plus the friendliness of the Midwest. I love living near Lake Michigan.

Favorite composer: Georg Phillip Telemann. Incredibly prolific, and each piece is a gem. My favorite musical form is Theme and Variations. It holds the key to our ability to make a better world. An eternal challenge to look at situations in new ways.

In architecture school I learned that design “problems” have “solutions.” Just when you think you’ve composed the last possible variation, your mind shifts and discovers yet another way. That’s beautiful and hopeful.

Significant teachers and mentors:
Over the years, Dr. Mo had a lot of accomplished and talented instructors. Some of his most significant teachers/mentors include: James Tocco, Leon Fleisher, and Emanuel Ax.

Awards and achievements:

Pianist Sung Hoon Mo has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician.
Sung has performed for the American Embassy in Guatemala and has toured throughout Puerto Rico, giving concerts at San Juan Conservatory and the Ponce Museum.

He was featured on PBS and has been heard on many radio broadcasts, including WQXR in New York City as a winner of the Bergen Philharmonic Concerto Competition.

He has given master classes and lectures in Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee and the National Conservatory of Music at Guatamala City.

In Germany, he has toured with violinist Victor Tretjakov and violist Yuri Bashmet in an ensemble Villa Musica.

He has collaborated with artists including violinist Charles Castleman, and cellists Pieter Wispelwey and Emilio Colon, with whom he has recorded on the Klavier and the Enharmonic labels.

Erica Anderson has been a member of the Music Institute’s oboe faculty since September 2000 and is currently the head of the Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion Department. She has a bachelor of music degree from Eastman School of Music and a master of music degree from DePaul University, both in oboe performance. She is a member of Music Institute ensemble-in-residence Quintet Attacca and plays second oboe with Music of the Baroque and Chicago Philharmonic, with which she also plays English horn. She is an adjunct faculty member at Carthage College.

My passions are teaching and playing the oboe.
I have been teaching the oboe for 27 years (20 at MIC, 6 at Carthage College where I also teach a class in woodwind pedagogy).
I implement a thoughtful yet humorous approach to oboe teaching, and my students have fun and excel. Currently, I have 30 students. Typically, my students stay with me for 6 or 7 years. I currently have former students at Colorado College, Washington University, the Naval Academy, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Rice, Harvard, Jacobs School of Music at Indiana, and Eastman, and I wrote letters of recommendation for all of them.
I continually work on professional development to keep my teaching fresh and topical. I specialize in early student pedagogy, fitting oboe/music into a busy student's life, and preparing serious oboists for college. My students have performance opportunities at MIC that include department recitals, studio recitals, chamber music, and outreach concerts.

Most memorable musical moment:
One of my most gratifying and exciting musical moments was when I played English horn on Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet with the Chicago Philharmonic and the Joffrey Ballet at Lincoln Center in New York City. The entire ballet ends with a beautiful English horn solo and it felt magical to get to play it!

The benefits of studying music are myriad and still being discovered. Music is one of the only professions that can be identified via brain scan because of the profound neurological impact music has on the brain. The neural pathways that are formed by musical studies have an increasingly acknowledged positive effect on humans throughout their lives. I love observing how studying music helps organize my children's and my students' thoughts and emotions.

Playing an instrument is the perfect blend of the mental, physical, and emotional capabilities of a person. What do I love about playing the oboe? I love the oboe because we get to make reeds! How cool is it that I get to make a part of my instrument and working on that aspect is as important as practicing? And I can talk to friends or listen to podcasts while doing it. I love playing the oboe because I feel like I can express part of my soul that is nonverbal and true.

Marta Aznavoorian has performed to critical acclaim throughout the world as orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. A Chicago native, she has performed in her hometown’s most prestigious venues, and has appeared as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Aspen Concert Orchestra, The New Millenium Orchestra, San Angelo Symphony and San Diego Symphony, working with such renowned conductors as the late Sir George Solti, Lukas Foss, Henry Mazer, Francesco Milioto, Larry Eckerling, and Michael Tilson Thomas.

She was the top prizewinner in the Aspen Music Festival Piano Competition, Union League competition and Young Performer's Competition.

Her solo recital credits include the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Sydney Opera House, Steinway Hall, Weill Hall, Caramoor Festival, Tanglewood Festival, Music in the Loft, Dame Myra Hess Series, and Green Lake Music Festival, Camarata Pacifica, and the Ravinia Festival.

Collaborative concerts for Ms. Aznavoorian include Ravinia Festival recital with cellist Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and concerts with members of the Chicago Chamber Musicians.

Already exhibiting an extensive discography including Sonatas by Stravinisky and Ravel with violinist Jennifer Frautschi, Ms. Aznavoorian's CD with the Lincoln Trio entitled “Notable Women” won a Grammy Award for best producer Judith Sherman. The Lincoln Trio’s latest CD “Annalies” received a 2014 Grammy nomination. Ms. Aznavoorian records for Cedille and Naxos labels.

Equally at home in the classical repertoire as well as the twentieth and twenty first century works, Ms. Aznavoorian has performed premiers by Augusta Read Thomas, Laura Schwendinger, Stacy Garrop and Marta Ptaszynska, as well as standard repertoire such as Poulenc, Mozart and Schumann Piano Concerto. In strong demand as a chamber musician, Ms. Aznavoorian has collaborated with many artists such as the Pacifica Quartet, Julian Rachlin and concertizes frequently with her sister, cellist Ani Aznavoorian.

She is a founding member of the celebrated Lincoln Trio, which has had successful tours throughout the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia. Ms. Aznavoorian holds both a faculty position at the Music Institute of Chicago, and an ensemble-in-residence post with the Lincoln Trio at the Merit School of Music.

Dr. Daniel Baer has been a member of the Music Institute’s piano faculty since September 2017. He earned his doctor of musical arts and bachelor of music degrees from the Eastman School of Music and his master of music degree from The Juilliard School. He has performed across the United States and Europe, including in solo and collaborative recitals at the International Bergen Arts Festival, the Grieg Society of Oslo, Avery Fischer Hall, Kilbourn Hall, Nichols Concert Hall, and Steinway Hall.

Dr. Baer won first prize, the Marshall Prize, at the 2015 Grieg Festival Young Artist Competition held in Sarasota, Florida. He has been a prizewinner in many other national and international piano competitions including the Iowa Piano Competition, the National Federation of Music Clubs Biennial Competition, and the Empire State young artist piano competition.

In 2020, Daniel Baer was selected to be the artist-pianist for the 2020-2021 LYNX Project. He will be premiering new songs for voice and piano as well as recording songs for an anthology celebrating four years of the autism advocacy series. You can learn more at lynxproject.org. I believe the individual student is the centerpiece of all music education. I look to contribute all necessary tools for each student to discover, interpret, and express their musical voice. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to help guide the student through their own unique path to their highest potential.  

Because music is such a personal subject, I help my students set goals according to the role music plays in their lives. Additionally, I am aware of the depth of diversity among students and the role it plays in the individual’s foundation of values both in and out of music. Knowing this, I strive to incorporate the benefits and lessons gained through music into the student's unique interests. While I always have a definitive set of fundamental skills and goals for all of my students, what they attain personally from developing these skills is most important.

I love to cook, play video games, and spend time lounging on the couch with my wife and our pets!

Most memorable musical moment:
My most memorable musical moment was performing on stage with Andrea Bocelli and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in the Fiserv Forum arena. What a voice!

What you love about Chicago:
I absolutely love the food culture in Chicago. There are so many different cuisines and restaurants to explore all around the city, and I have only scratched the surface since moving from Atlanta. My favorite restaurant so far is The Gage on Michigan Avenue!

Outside of music, I love travel, playing soccer, and spending time in Vermont!

As a new resident in Chicago, I've been discovering all of the amazing restaurants there are in the West Loop and the super genuine and kind folks (and dogs) that we've been meeting!

A few of my favorite things are string quartets, harp trios, and voice-viola-piano trios; collaborating with composers; my two dogs; and reading on a boat.

Elaine has been influenced by many musicians in her musical career beginning with her first teacher Dorothy Crost with whom she began her musical training at age 6 until graduation from high school. She credits Jack Radunsky, her teacher at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with bringing her playing to the next level as well as later study with Vitya Vronsky at the Cleveland institute of Music.

Continued private study and master classes with Menahem Pressler at Indiana University since 1983 have been an important component in developing and maintaining a Ms. Felder’s artistry as a pianist.

Professional Affiliations & Activities

In 2004 and 2006: invited to piano faculty of the Pitten Summer Music Festival in Pitten, Austria

In February 2014: invited to give master classes and pedagogy lectures at the pre-college Teaching Symposium at the University of Florida.

In May of 2017: presented with the Richard D. Colburn Award for Teaching Excellence at the annual Music Institute of Chicago gala.

Elaine was a faculty member at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 1970 - 1974

She has been on the faculty of MIC since 1976, is the chair of the MIC Piano Department, and coaches chamber music both in the Community School and the Academy of MIC.
