Youth Competition Rules & Application

Chicago National Youth Competition for Piano Duos

The competition is open to young piano duos age 9-18, currently in elementary to high school, studying  and residing in the United States.


General Rules

 

Contestants must be residing and studying in USA.

 

Age: Division will be determined by the age of the older contestant. For instance, a duo whose members are 13 and 15 need to enroll in the senior division.

 

Application fee: $50 per duo  | Application deadline: April 25, 2017


Judges:  Judges will be experts in duo piano and chamber music, and not affiliated with Music Institute of Chicago


Junior Division Repertoire and Schedule

(recommended for duos ages 8-13)

 

Saturday, June 3  | 9 am - 1 pm

There will be a short winners’ recital after the announcement of prizes

 

Repertoire:

2 or 3 contrasting pieces or movements, one of  which must be a fast movement from a classical sonata by J.C. Bach, W.F. Bach,  W.A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, M. Clementi, etc. (1st movement Sonata-Allegro or Finale)

 

Works for one or two pianos, four hands, are permitted, or a mixture of both. All repertoire must be original works. Transcriptions are accepted only if by the original composers. “Teaching” arrangements are not permitted and will result in disqualification. Please check with directors early when planning your program so you are sure all selections are acceptable.

Program length: 10-20’

Please note: audition will be no more than 15’

 

Prizes:

Grand Prize: $300/duo

2nd prize $ 200/duo

3rd prize: $100/duo

 

Winners concert:

All prize winners must participate, or forfeit their prize. The concert will be recorded for eventual broadcast on WFMT “Introductions.”

All contestants must be present for the announcement of winners and the winners’ recital.


Senior Division Repertoire and Schedule

Sunday, June 4 | 12:30 – 5:30 pm
