Art of the Jazz Band

Session I: June 10-14, 2024    |    Session II: June 24-June 28, 2024

Don't miss the the opportunity to improve your ensemble, improvisational, and sight-reading skills through work with some of Chicago's finest jazz performers and educators. Saxophonist Juli Wood (Session I) and trombonist Audrey Morrison (Session II) lead interactive rehearsals joined by members of the MIC jazz faculty for sectionals, coaching, and master classes. Group listening to jazz recordings and class discussion are included. Participants will learn how to read jazz arrangements and play by ear. The week will culminate with an open rehearsal for family and friends on the final day of camp.
 
Prerequisites:
•    Proficiency on instrument and ability to play at least 3 major scales from memory.
•    One year of jazz ensemble experience or private lessons which include jazz is preferred.
•    Listening to jazz is encouraged.
•    Phone interview required prior to registration.
 
Location: Evanston East Campus

Cost:  $275 per session; register for one or both sessions

  • 1:30 – 2:30 PM Group Rehearsal – reading jazz music and learning tunes by ear; studying jazz scales and theory and different approaches to improvisation.
  • 2:30 – 3:30 PM Master Classes/Sectionals – with MIC Jazz Faculty
  • 3:30 – 4:00 PM Group Rehearsal & Guided Listening Session
