This is a new class for advanced violinists and violists who have experience performing unaccompanied Bach Sonatas, Partitas and Suites.

Have you ever wondered how to make a phrase and create drama and excitement in a performance?  Or how judges and committees listen to determine if you are a strong player and sophisticated musician?  Do you feel that you just do what your teacher says when it comes to phrasing and expression?  In this class we will work on exactly these things and with immediate results!

Key components

  • Participants will prepare one movement of solo Bach of their choice and the first movement of Sonata No. 1 in G minor.
  • Students will analyze and study the repertoire together, identifying phrasing and cadences and working collaboratively to determine and apply interpretive tools such as time, sound production, tone color, dynamics, and articulation.
  • Students will perform for each other and offer feedback based on common criteria. Each student will be given specific assignments to practice in between classes.
Prerequisite(s)

This class is for advanced violinists and violists who have experience performing unaccompanied Bach sonatas, partitas, and suites. The first movement of the First Sonata in G minor by Bach is required and must be prepared in advance. (Violists accepted into the class will play this movement a 5th lower).  All students must also prepare an unaccompanied Bach piece of their choice (other than a fugue or the chaconne).
