Using Music To Ease Anxiety

Anxiety.org disseminates high quality, cutting edge mental health research and insights from world-class doctors, therapists, researchers, and specialists who have dedicated their lives to understanding and curing anxiety. Their new feature, by ITA's Executive Director, Jenni Rook, offers a brief overview of Music Therapy as well as some practical tips. Here's a brief excerpt:

When you play music as you're cleaning the house or listen to an energetic song during your morning workout, you could be using music therapuetically on a daily basis without even realizing it. However, by thoughtfully creating a selection of music, you can use a playlist to combat stress, achieve relaxation, increase motivation, and evoke positive emotions. In this process, you want to first address your current emotional state, whether it be anxious, restless, or sad. It's important that you don't jump straight to calming and relaxing music, but instead, gradually bring yourself to songs that soothe you through a progression of music that first empathizes with your current mood and then slowly uplifts your emotional state.
