Education: 

David received his MME, Special Field in Woodwind Pedagogy from the University of North Texas, his Bachelor's in Music Education from the University of North Texas, and was involved in additional graduate studies at Northwestern University for Doctoral Saxophone.

Significant teachers and mentors: 

A student of many gifted musicians, some of Mr. Fivecoate's significant teachers/mentors include: Frederick L. Hemke, his saxophone instructor at Northwestern University, Debra Richtmeyer and James Riggs, his saxophone instructors at University of North Texas, and Dennis Giokas and Ed Snider, his clarinet instructors at University of North Texas.

Teaching philosophy and areas of expertise: 

Given his passion for music, David's teaching philosophy revolves around his desire to encourage students to become independent learners of music.

Awards and achievements: 

Some of Mr. Fivecoate's biggest accomplishments include him being a founding member of two very important musical groups: the Guantum Quartet, and the Houston Saxophone Quartet. He also performed at World Saxophone Congresses, Chicago Sinfonietta, CUBE, Chicago Composers Consortium, and Elgin Symphony. He did a Pedagogy of Jazz Improvisation with Rich Matteson, had Master Class at the University of North Texas with Donald Sinta, Saxophone Lesson with Albert Tipton, Flute, and Recorded Chamber Music CD, Centaur 2590. David has also had countless solo recitals, and solo improvisations for liturgies and duos with organist Richard Webster, St. Luke's Church in Evanston. In addition, he has had vocal performances with The WolfGang (Symphony Center and WFMT), and the Chicago Baroque Ensemble. He's also the two-time first prize winner of the Saxophone Journal Performance Award.

Professional affiliations & activities: 

Mr. Fivecoate is a former faculty member at Texas Southern University and Northern Illinois University, and a current faculty member at DePaul University School of Music and the Community Music Division.

Interests outside of music: 

Aside from the music world, David enjoys Hoop Dance in his free time.

Performing to a full house at Symphony Center. Our vocal quartet followed Daniel Barenboim and Alex Klein. No pressure...
