Student Spotlight: Kay Furey

Student Spotlight: Kay Furey

A chance conversation at a community band concert led Kay Furey back to music after years away from playing. After mentioning that she had played tuba growing up, she soon found herself at the Music Institute of Chicago learning a new instrument and joining the MIC Concert Band, an ensemble for adults of all ages and experience levels.

Now, after a decade with the MIC Concert Band, Kay reflects on what has kept her coming back: supportive teachers and the sense of community that comes from making music alongside others. Starting over as an adult beginner, she learned to take things one note at a time. Today, she performs in four bands and has also participated in MIC’s Chicago Duo Piano Festival.
