The Music Institute of Chicago is excited to offer students the opportunity to participate in the Royal Conservatory of Music’s internationally recognized Certificate Program. This program guides students from elementary to advanced levels and formally recognizes their musical progress.Â
What is the RCM Certificate Program?
The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Certificate Program is a comprehensive music education program that provides a structured sequence of levels to enhance musical development while providing the opportunity to earn internationally recognized certification. These studies not only encourage stronger musicianship but also support growth as thoughtful and confident performers.Â
Students prepare repertoire, technical studies, ear training, and music theory skills appropriate to their level and may choose to take official RCM examinations to earn certificates. Each exam level represents a milestone in a student’s musical development.Â
The RCM Certificate Program at the Music Institute of Chicago provides students with meaningful goals and recognition for their musical progress. Through a structured sequence of levels, students build strong performance skills, musicianship, and deepen their understanding of music.Â
Exams offer valuable feedback from professional, independent examiners and mark important milestones in a student’s musical journey. At higher levels, RCM certification can also support high school credit and enhance college applications by demonstrating discipline, dedication, and advanced musical achievement.Â
At each level of the RCM Certificate Program, students are supported with accompanying publications to help them develop into well-rounded musicians.Â
The integrated curriculum encompasses repertoire from classical to contemporary, as well as etudes, ear tests, sight-reading, technique, and theory for over 20 instruments, voice, speech, arts, and drama.Â

What is music theory and why is it important?
Music theory is the study of the musical elements that shape how music is written and structured. In the RCM Certificate Program, music theory instruction helps students understand the building blocks of music -rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and musical notation – and how they work togetherAs students study and understand these elements more deeply, they are able to learn new pieces more efficiently, perform with a deeper understanding, and communicate their ideas more successfully.
By connecting musical knowledge with practical performance, theory study supports instrumental lessons and helps students develop strong, well-rounded musicianship.Â
How does the RCM Certificate Program work?
As students progress through the program, they begin studying music theory in addition to their instrumental lessons.Â
Theory studies help students deepen their understanding of music and support stronger performance skills, including:Â
• Reading music more fluently
• Understanding harmony and musical structure
• Developing ear training and musical analysis skills
Beginning at intermediate levels, certain theory exams are required in order to receive certification for higher practical exam levels.
