Student Spotlight: Sarah Tepper

October 14th, 2025
“I love sharing music with my daughters, whether helping them in their practice, introducing them to a favorite piece, or just demonstrating the value of pursuing something that brings them joy, whatever that may be.”
When Sarah Tepper signed her daughter up for piano lessons, she didn’t expect to end up back at the keyboard herself. But watching her daughter begin lessons reminded her of the joy she once felt sitting at the piano as a child.
“I am thankful that my parents introduced me to the piano as a child. My studies were not serious, but a spark was there. I bought a keyboard in college, but it just collected dust for 15 years. When I registered my daughter for her first piano lesson in 2021, I knew I had to take lessons as well.”
This spark led Sarah to the Music institute of Chicago, where she now studies piano with Devvora Papatheodorou Schreier and musicianship with Marie Alatalo. She was drawn to MIC by the opportunity to join a diverse community united by a love of music. “At MIC, I have met students with inspiring personal and professional lives, all of whom are committed to their growth as musicians. This motivates me to keep showing up, no matter what else is going on in my life,” she says.
For Sarah, who balances work as a consultant with family life, playing the piano has become a quiet space. “Music has provided a respite from the noise of daily life—the to-do lists, the distractions, the constant newsfeed—allowing me to connect to something that is timeless and profound.”
Music has become a way for Sarah to connect more deeply with others, especially her daughters. “My practice is my meditation and my opportunity for daily personal growth,” she says. “When I experience a piece as part of a group, whether at a student recital or at the symphony, I feel closer to everyone around me and more hopeful for our future. I love sharing music with my daughters, whether helping them in their practice, introducing them to a favorite piece, or just demonstrating the value of pursuing something that brings them joy, whatever that may be.”

As part of her return to music, Sarah decided to deepen her understanding through theory classes. “I realized I was unable to easily identify chords or understand the structure of a piece, so it seemed natural to join a class. I was also happy to have the chance to meet other adult students,” she shares. “Studying music theory has deepened my musical knowledge in so many ways. I am a more proficient sight reader. I understand harmonic progressions. I have a better appreciation for the stylistic characteristics of each era. My listening experience is enriched by the framework that music theory provides.”
Reflecting on her journey, Sarah is grateful for the decision that brought her back to music and the support from her teachers. “Whenever my confidence wavers, Devvora helps me maintain perspective and simply get on with the business of learning. I know that she is just as invested in my success as I am.”
What began as a way to support her daughter has become a lifelong pursuit of her own. “Each time I sit at the piano, I am reminded of how much there is to learn,” she says. “Music has taught me to set aside notions of achievement and perfection in favor of expression and connection.”
Looking ahead, Sarah embraces the journey with optimism. “My goal is simply to continue growing as a student of music and as a pianist for many years to come.”
