Student Spotlight: Scarlet Newman

Scarlett Newman was three years old when she sat down for her first piano lesson at the Music Institute of Chicago. Thirteen years later, she’s fresh off a performance as Maria in a high school production of West Side Story, and preparing for a career in musical theater.
“I’ve never known a world without music,” she says. Encouraged by her mother’s own playing, Scarlett started with piano and violin lessons, added musicianship, then four years ago began voice lessons with Dr. Dorothy Jean Lloyd. “Music has always been a safe place for me, something comforting while also something that stimulates my creativity. Music is also infinite–there are always new things to discover.”
That sense of discovery has grown into self expression, connecting with others, and telling stories through music. "Music is always there for me," she says. "I listen to music when I'm feeling happy and when I'm feeling down. Music is also my way of expressing myself when I can no longer use words…Through performances and programs, I have made connections and created life-long friendships. I also find that music is a way of storytelling and always has an impact on the audience, which sparks in-depth conversations after a performance.”
Over the years, Scarlett has seen herself blossom, tackling new styles and discovering the impact of creative musical choices. She recently took on the role of Maria in a production of West Side Story at the Interlochen Arts Camp, and the rehearsal process became one of her favorite memories, particularly a moment when she and her director discussed a vocal choice meant to reflect the character's growth. “This was not just a question of vocal technique–it was considering the story and character arc of Maria. Connecting musical choices to reflect a story was something that not only completely changed how I viewed my process as a vocalist and artist, but changed the way I perceive the effect of music.”
That same instinct for storytelling shaped a piece Scarlett is especially proud to have learned, "Deh Vieni Non Tardar" from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro “I had never sung something classically, let alone from an opera, so it had its challenges,” she shares. “I had never sung in Italian, so I learned how to pronounce the words correctly and apply classical technique. It was really scary at first, but I remember after listening to a bunch of different recordings, plunking notes out at the piano, and practicing with my teacher, I had developed a love for the song and that style of singing, which opened the door for more classical singing. I’m so glad I was introduced to this song because of how it has expanded my range as an artist!”
Looking back on her years of study, Scarlett sees just how much the process itself has shaped her. “After so many years, I truly understand and enjoy the process in music. There is so much artistry in discipline and hard work,’ she says. “Music has also helped me develop my sense of self. Through performing, I get better at being present, enjoying the art, and sharing instead of just presenting.”
Between rehearsals and performances, Scarlett enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending musical theater performances, dancing, making collages, and looking for vintage jewelry. She's also an avid collector of Monchhichis and Hello Kitty blind boxes.
Scarlett is still finding new things to discover, on stage and off. "I intend to pursue musical theatre in college at a program that allows me to explore my artistry and prepare me for a professional career on Broadway," she says. She’s ready to keep learning, performing, and seeing where music takes her.
