Significant teachers and mentors: 

Unlike other individuals who had been greatly influenced by their instructors over the years, one of Mr. Hefner's biggest influences was a man who instructed him outside of the music world. Dr. Stephen Steele, his 6th grade science teacher, in addition to Mr. Sternberg, and Dr. Stephen Parsons.

Teaching philosophy and areas of expertise: 

Paul's teaching philosophy put simply is that music is capable of so many things. One of his favorite things is how music can bring a diverse group of people together to share the same passion and accomplish the same goal, which is to make great music and have fun while doing it. His goal is to promote this type of diverse collaboration and hopefully, pass on a legacy that brings people of many different backgrounds together for the same purpose.

Awards and achievements: 

 Paul's music work often includes judging Jr. High and High School solo and ensemble contests as well as band, orchestra, and jazz contests. Paul is also trained on woodwind technique, helping beginning woodwind students, and community members wanting to pick up their instrument again. Additionally, Paul has been a featured soloist with national groups including Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, Windjammers Unlimited in Florida, as well as local groups including FullScore Chamber Orchestra, and the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra. Paul's students have successfully auditioned to become members of the CYSO (Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra) and have gained entry to well-regarded colleges studying music performance and education. Paul is a member of the FullScore Chamber Orchestra where he is principal trombone. He is on the artistic advisory board for the music non-profit Young At Heart. Paul also is a founding member of the North Suburban Wind Ensemble. His performance ensembles, (Lakeshore Brass Ensembles), consists of a variety of groups performing at special events in the Illinois and Wisconsin areas.

Professional affiliations & activities: 

Mr. Hefner is also involved as the Principal Trombone FullScore Chamber Orchestra, Young At Heart Advisory Board, and Windjammers Unlimited Circus Music.

Interests outside of music: 

Outside of the music world, Paul enjoys spending time with family, and fitness training.

1 John 4:4. "You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world."

Favorite practice tip: 

Daily, consistently.

Favorite composer or piece to play: 

Antything Brahms, Mahler, Jack Teagarden, Bobby Hackett.

Favorite musical moment: 

Anytime I'm playing in a pit orchestra.
